Gray Days and Gold May 2024

Hello, friends. I know so many music fans who only listen to old favorites, convinced that “good new music” is a contradiction in terms. I get it—quality stuff is hard to find when the media’s splintered into a million sub-niches. Who are the trusted and where is the sweet harmony? Perhaps the answer to both is Gray Days and Gold, a monthly show in which I chase the bright, elusive butterfly of beyond-the-pale pop music and put it on display so that you can appreciate its iridescent beauty at your leisure. This episode also contains a little tribute to 10cc’s weird, wonderful album Sheet Music, which turns fifty this month.

You can listen to this episode via the embedded player just below in this blog post, or on the Mixcloud website, via the Mixcloud mobile app, on your Sonos system, etc. (If you’re reading via an email digest in which the audio player isn’t embedded, please click the button below.)

There’s also a more barebones iteration of this episode’s playlist (minus my commentary, as well as songs that are missing from the streaming libraries) on Spotify and Apple Music.

If you like what you hear, please support the artists. You’ll find buy links (mostly to Bandcamp) to the tracks in the bulleted list below.
