Hailing from Baraboo, WI, these multi-instrumentalists throw a bit of everything (strings, horns, banjo, whistling, handclaps, electric autoharp, arpeggiated harmonies, syncopated rhythms) into their debut album. It’s pretty common that the sounds you heard on the first verse don’t reappear in the second; but that playfulness with the arrangements is always in service to excellent songs, never upstaging them. And Monica Martin’s voice… stellar. Here’s a somewhat quiet, acoustic rendition of “Slow Motion”; it’s a little ‘folkier’ than the album version, but I thought it better highlighted the clarinet solo, because fucking clarinet solo. This group is immensely talented; I think there’s nothing they won’t be able to do.
