I wish I hadn’t used the phrase “complex tapestry” in my last post, because I have a limited vocabulary and kind of need it again now. London’s Bombay Bicycle Club starts with instrumental loops—samples from far and wide, not least inspired by singer Jack Steadman’s global travels—to create texture, rhythm and mood, adding and subtracting (themselves, more samples, etc.) from there. While one’s occasionally bound to hear something familiar in the combinations (“Come To”, with its flanged guitar and string samples, brings to mind ’90s Britpop/shoegaze for me; Suede, perhaps?), the sounds belong to many eras and cultures and blend into something unique and standing apart from any one time or place. It’s a rich, multi-layered album that reveals something new with each listen.
