Given her ongoing struggle with cancer, Christ, I’m just happy we still have Sharon Jones, much less another terrific album from her and the Dap-Kings. (The record was actually intended for release in 2013 but shelved after her diagnosis.) Like Sharon, it’s short and solid as a rock. Everything you could want is here: irresistibly funky grooves [“You’ll Be Lonely”, “Long Time, Wrong Time”], tenderness [“Making Up and Breaking Up (And Making Up and Breaking Up Over Again)”, “Slow Down, Love”], keepin’ on in the face of continual adversity [“We Get Along”, “People Don’t Get What They Deserve”]… SJ&DK don’t necessarily deal in surprises—it always sounds about like 1966 in their world—but what they do, they do better than anyone else and the songs are instant classics in their catalog.

The video below is mislabeled; it’s really “Get Up and Get Out”, performed live in Rotterdam. I include it for Sharon’s testifying (about her sickness and recovery) halfway through which, frankly, brought me to tears.
